CURBSIDE RECYCLING COLLECTION

Frederick County Department of

Solid Waste Management

MEDIA ADVISORY

February 9, 2010

————————

CURBSIDE RECYCLING COLLECTION

CANCELLED FOR REMAINDER OF WEEK

Winter Storms Disrupt Residential Recycling Collection: February 10-13, 2010

Frederick County, Md. – The Department of Solid Waste Management has cancelled curbside recycling collections for the remainder of this week.  This decision has been made in an effort to assist the Frederick County Office of Highway Operations with their continuing snow removal efforts and also in response to the forecast of additional snowfall within the next 36 hours.

This period of cancelled service extends from Wednesday, February 10 through Saturday, February 13.  Residential recycling collection will begin again on Monday, February 15, and follow the program’s normal biweekly collection schedule.  Please note: this means that those areas impacted by this week’s cancellation of service will resume curbside recycling during the week of February 22, 2010.

All residents are asked to assist with ongoing snow removal efforts by placing their recycling carts and bins a reasonable distance from the edge of roadways.  As a reminder, there is no limit to the amount of recyclable materials that may be set out for collection.  Excess recyclables that do not fit in a blue bin or cart may be placed alongside a County-issued container, in cardboard boxes, paper bags or open-top containers, on the next scheduled collection day.  Single stream materials are not accepted for collection in plastic bags.

Further information and updates on the status Department of Solid Waste Management programs can be found online by visiting: www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/recycle or by calling 301-600-2960 to hear regularly updated voice recordings.

Remember: Heat Pump

Please remember if your home has a heat pump, clear the ice and snow away from the unit so air can circulate properly.

Thanks,

Mayor and Council

Quick Tips for Safer Snow-Shoveling

Quick Tips for Safer Snow-Shoveling

  • Shovel early and often. Newly fallen snow is lighter than heavily packed or partially melted snow. Before you begin shoveling, warm up your muscles for 10 minutes with light exercise.
  • Push the snow instead of lifting it. Keep the shovel close to your body. Space your hands on the shovel. It increases your leverage.
  • If you must lift the snow, lift it properly. Squat with your legs apart, knees bent and back straight. Lift with your legs. Do not bend at the waist. Scoop small amounts of snow into the shovel and walk to where you want to dump it. Holding a shovelful of snow with your arms outstretched puts too much weight on your spine.Never remove deep snow all at once; do it piecemeal. Shovel an inch or two, then take another inch off. Rest, and repeat if necessary.
  • Do not throw the snow over your shoulder or to the side. This action requires a twisting motion that stresses your back.
  • See what you are shoveling. Do not let a hat or scarf block your vision. Watch out for ice patches and uneven surfaces. Avoid falls by wearing shoes/boots that have slip-resistant soles.
  • Use a shovel that feels comfortable for your height and strength. Avoid a shovel that is too heavy or too long.
  • Pace yourself. Shoveling snow is an aerobic activity, comparable to weightlifting. Take frequent breaks and replenish fluids to prevent dehydration, which affects muscles.
  • Check with your doctor. If you have a medical condition or do not exercise regularly, talk with your doctor before shoveling. If necessary, hire someone to remove the snow.

The potential for musculoskeletal injury is high among inexperienced snow-shovelers, as well as those who have shoveled so many times during the winter that they don’t bother to think about snow safety, AAOS noted.

Frederick County Snow Removal

Snow Removal

Due to budget concerns that are effecting several counties in Maryland, including Frederick County, we are changing the way we plow roads.  We will plow 2 lanes on all roads so that cars may pass.  We will not be clearing curb-to-curb as we have done in the past seasons.

Here are some tips to follow during a snow event:

    •    Per County Code, all County roads are designated Snow
         Emergency Routes.

    •    Please park vehicles in driveways and not on the roadway
or in cul-de-sacs.  Vehicles in the roadways or cul-de-sacs
will be towed at the owner’s expense.

    •    If you don’t have access to an off-street parking area,
neighborhoods can help by parking all vehicles on the same
side of the street.  This gives the plow more room to work.

    •    If you shovel your driveway apron before the snow plow
comes through, always place the snow on the right,
         facing the street.

    •    Stay at least two car lengths behind a snow plow for every
20 mph you are traveling; never cut between a caravan of
         plows that clearing the highway.

    •   Listen to the radio before and during a storm to see if the
Snow Emergency Plan has been declared in Frederick
        County.

    •   Do not drive during a severe winter storm.

DO NOT THROW SNOW BACK INTO THE ROADWAY

During heavy snow events, we will plow only the roads listed on the Priority Roads list.  Once the storm has past, we will go and clear the secondary roads and subdivision roads.  Once all streets have been cleared and material has been applied, we will widen back all roads.
