Please be reminded that the first meeting of New Market Day(s) will be at Town Hall at 6:30, Thursday, January 21st (today), .
Members and well-wishers of the New Market Grange gathered at the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday to celebrate the organization’s 90th anniversary.
Paul Leatherman, the grange’s chaplain, gave the invocation, saying that for 90 years, God had blessed the organization’s efforts in the community.
“To us, 90 years seems like a long time, but it is less than a blink of an eye [to God],” Leatherman said.
Over the years, New Market Grange has donated dictionaries to third-graders at Deer Crossing, Liberty, New Market and Oakdale elementary schools, provided college scholarships to its members and extra classroom space for Frederick County Public Schools, held blood drives, and helped with other community events. The grange’s mission is to advocate for rural values and help those in need.
Scott Burall, the grange’s president, offered a special acknowledgement to those members who had been with the grange for more than half of its history. These Golden Sheave members — those who had been grangers for more than 50 years — had taught all of their juniors a good deal about what the organization means, he said. more…

If a rainy day comes to New Market in the second half of fiscal 2010, the town will only have $6,200 to spend on it.
Less tax revenue from Adventure Park USA and overspending on items such as code enforcement and permitting costs led to a $35,129 gap in the town’s $300,000 budget.
The town will be able to keep all of its programs, except the crossing guard program it already cut, but will spend half as much money as was originally budgeted.
The five–member council voted 4-0 at its meeting Wednesday night — Councilwoman Rita Mueller was absent — to cut spending by $20,289, and make up the difference with $14,840 out of its reserve fund, leaving $6,265 for a rainy day. more…

Middletown — After the Linganore boys basketball team beat Middletown on Thursday night, Lancers coach Tom Kraft pointed to his hair and said he lost “more of these” because of the game.
He was referring to the stress put on him because of his team’s struggles in the fourth quarter, which included four straight turnovers to start the quarter and five straight missed free throws in the last minute. more…
The New Market Grange will host a celebration of its 90th anniversary at the Libertytown Fire Hall on Jan. 16.
Grange member Richard Stonebreaker, who will be delivering a history of the Grange at the celebration, said that a number of pieces of memorabilia would be on display, including a Bible used by the organization dating back to 1874.
The current incarnation of the New Market Grange dates back to 1920, and had occupied two halls in New Market before settling at its current location on 8th Alley in the 1960s, according to Stonebreaker.
The New Market Grange is a Subordinate Grange, or a local unit of the National Grange, an organization which began after the Civil War to advocate for rural- and farm-related issues on a national level.
Ed Luttrell, president of the National Grange, will also be attending the celebration, according to Stonebreaker.
However, despite the high-profile guest and 50 or more members and their guests in attendance, Stonebreaker said grange members hoped for a “low key” evening, with a few speakers and a social hour.
“We want to have it be a time to get together with other grange members and celebrate our accomplishments,” he said.
The event will begin at 2 p.m.
