We wish to inform Town residents and neighbors that we are discontinuing the Town’s School Crossing Guard Program. The crossing guards’ last day is December 01, 2009. The reason for discontinuing the program is very few children are walking to our schools. Less than 5 children per day crossed at the intersections on Main Street. Less than 10 middle school children and less than 10 elementary school children crossed at Royal Oak Drive – Wicomico Ct. intersection.
The schools have been notified that we are discontinuing this program and we have asked the principals to inform their parents. We ak all vehicle drivers to obey traffic speeds and traffic signs in the areas of the crosswalks. Frederick County Sheriff Deputies will continue to monitor the corsswalk areas on an intermittent basis.
We would like to thank Crossing Guards, Ms. Debbie and Ms. Londa, for their work and for being great ambassadors for the Town.
If anyone has questions concerning the crossing guards, please contact Councilman Jake Romanell at (301) 796-5436.

New Market sub shop offers taste of Philly

By lunchtime on a recent weekday at South Street Subs the crowd was popping, in a quiet sort of way.
Low volume Rock and Roll classics from the 1970s and the staccato chop of a spatula hitting the grill, punctuating the muted sizzle of meats, onions and peppers, kept noise levels of hungry patrons muted for the most part.
That’s a positive for a first-time customer or indecisive lunchgoer at South Street Subs. It takes a few moments to surrender a choice to the countergirl from among dozens of reasonably priced options from the menu. Concentration is key. more…
New Market’s ethics law exemption to continue
But State Ethics Commission advises town to consider creating regulations of its own
The Town of New Market will keep its 28-year exemption from state ethics regulations.
In an e-mail forwarded to The Gazette by Mayor Winslow Burhans III on Tuesday, Town Clerk Deb Butler informed town officials that the State Ethics Commission has decided to continue the exemption and advised the town to consider creating ethics regulations of its own.
Butler wrote that the commission may again review the town’s exemption status as a part of the 2010 census, as the commission will be reviewing all municipalities at that time. more…

Sniffles were audible and tissues appeared as New Market Elementary School students handed flowers to their invited guests Wednesday morning.
While the student body sang “You Are Our Heroes,” buddy poppies were presented to about 50 military veterans honored at the school’s second annual Veterans Day program.
“What can you say to a hero, to someone who’s always there?” the children sang. “We can say thank you.”
New Market ‘s gymnasium was packed for the tribute. From the presentation of colors by the Fort Detrick Color Guard to song selection, every element of the program was chosen to honor veterans of the nation’s armed forces. That included the students’ attire. One-third wore red tops, one-third white and the rest blue. Seated on the gym floor, they formed a living flag. more…

New Market — A councilman Wednesday night failed in his quest to change the town’s sign along I-70.
Asking his colleagues to advertise some of the town’s newer features alongside the old, Councilman David Price came up short after more than two hours of sometimes heated discussion.
Only Councilwoman Rita Mueller sided with Price in the 2-3 vote.
Antiques owners or not, New Market residents and merchants like their decades-old sign that heralds the town as the “Antiques Capital of Maryland.”
