tulip tree fiber arts & antiques – 9 west main street 301 865 2879

image003

We offer a variety of hand woven & hand knit articles made by us, as well as antique coverlets, quilts, tablecloths, show towels, bed cases, & baskets.  There is a variety of natural and hand dyed woolen yarn, and knitting kits to make caps, socks, & mittens. A small selection of both antique and modern spinning and weaving tools, equipment, & books are available. Our family has been shepherds, spinners, dyers, & weavers for 25+ years, and we are happy to share that knowledge with others.

Although a small shop, there is modest variety of antiques: tables, chairs, cabinets, cooking items (copper, brass, & tin pots), stoneware, kitchen tools and molds, glassware & china, clocks, & …. Some of our whimsicals are relatively new: bird houses, tool boxes and trays, and some are much older. See if you can help us identify the early 20th century iron and wood wheel. Is it a steering wheel, and from what? Or is it something else?

On the walls are a mixture of original art (watercolors & oils) and prints. Most prints are from the late 19th & early – mid 20th century. A few hand colored botanical prints are from the late 17th/ early 18th century.

Honey from our garden and my brother’s garden is normally available. Due to a poor honey year, last years harvest is sold out. We should have some from this year’s harvest (late August/September).

We are normally open Friday, Saturday, & Sunday 11 – 5, but occasionally we are closed for family events, auctions, &  …..  If you are coming any distance, it is best to phone ahead.

Yowza is planning on launching in the Spring of 2009.  What is Yowza?  Have you ever left coupons at home for items you were going to purchase?  Dang-it! Well Yowza will allow you to digitally keep all your coupons on your i-phone or i-touch in a digital wallet.  Yowza will also let  merchants (New Market shops???) add coupons (limit of 3) and customers will be able to search Yowza to find out who in their area uses Yowza.  How cool is that.  To find out more about Yowza please visit their website.

Mayor’s Desk: Zoning Ordinance

window1

April 10, 2009

Dear Citizen:

The Town Council adopted the new Zoning Ordinance during last Wednesday’s meeting of Mayor & Council. It will become effective on April 29th. This has been a two year process culminating in a series of public workshops that resulted in a document that reflects the needs and desires of the community. I would like to thank all the members of P&Z who put many hours of work into this effort as well as HDC and the residents who participated in the workshops. This has truly been a community effort.

The new ordinance provides the tools to look to the horizon as we seek to expand our tax base in order to keep your taxes low. It provides our Historic District Commission the Maryland Historic Trust’s model ordinance they greatly desired. It provides HDC with unprecedented authority over building setbacks in order that they may be the appropriate custodian of the historic character of the Town. It provides site plan review for all properties contiguous to but not in the Historic District. Thus all the gateways to the HD are protected.

The new zoning also provides for demolition by neglect. This is a new tool that can be used to restore blighted structures such as the Manor House located in Brinkley Manor.

Many of you have expressed a desire on the Town’s blog site to see a coffee shop, a wine and cheese shop as well as other conveniences. We listened to you and made this possible through the new zoning.

Now, we are working on an amendment with Frederick County Division of Utilities and Solid Waste Management (DUSWM) to bring more water and sewer capacity to town for the foreseeable future. The Town only has 13 water and sewer taps available for food service establishments such as wine and cheese and coffee shops. Similarly, this amendment seeks the additional capacity to allow for the completion of Brinkley Manor and the Orchard. We anticipate this amendment will be ready for the public in the coming weeks.

No business in town has ever requested a tax subsidy. In fact, the Town only collects about $11,000.00 annually from Downtown businesses. The Town pays out $6,000.00 of that money to sponsor Christmas in New Market and New Market Days and the remainder to maintain the public restrooms. Rather, businesses have asked for a less bureaucratic process. The new zoning goes a long way in defining a clearer path for business. In correlation to that, David Price from Downtown New Market Partnership as well as 12 West Main and Serina Roy from Dublin Roasters are working on ways to better define and streamline the building and permitting process with the County. We have already met with DUSWM on this issue and will be meeting soon with the Division of Permitting and Development Review in order to establish a more coordinated effort to facilitate business development in New Market.

Your continued support of our business community is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Winslow
